Breemeersen nature reserve

The Breemeersen is a nature reserve of outstanding natural beauty, covering some 26 hectares in Nieuwkerke (one of the municipalities of Heuvelland). It is owned and managed by Natuurpunt and consists primarily of grasslands in the valley of the River Leie (Lys). This open landscape is a patchwork quilt of pastureland, meadows and hay fields, interspersed with ecologically valuable pools, ditches and woodland. The typical plants found in the reserve includestrawberry clover, sneezewort, meadow barley and greater pond sedge, while the fauna include hares, turtle doves, snipes, partridges, gray herons, kestrels, crested newts, brown hairstreak butterflies and small heath butterflies.
